The blaze broke out on Sunday, 29 March 2026, prompting a large-scale emergency response. Thick, black smoke filled the skies above Middleton town centre, visible from a considerable distance and causing widespread concern among residents and businesses.

Crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service remain at the scene, continuing efforts to bring the fire fully under control. Multiple fire engines were deployed, with firefighters working through difficult conditions in an ongoing operation.

Despite their efforts, the damage to the building is catastrophic. The structure has been deemed not salvageable, with reports confirming that only four bare walls now remain standing after the fire tore through the historic mill.

Eyewitnesses described a deeply distressing scene, with intense flames engulfing the building and large plumes of smoke dominating the skyline. For many in the community, the sight of Lodge Mill reduced to ruins has been both shocking and heartbreaking.

Greater Manchester Police have urged the public to avoid the area due to ongoing safety risks, including persistent smoke and the unstable condition of the remaining structure.

Road closures are currently in place around:

  • Market Place

  • Townley Street

  • Lodge Street

The loss of Lodge Mill marks a significant and emotional moment for Middleton, as a piece of the town’s heritage has been reduced to little more than its outer walls. As firefighters continue their work, the community is left to reflect on what has been lost.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said:  "Shortly after 5:48am this morning (Sunday 29 March) six fire engines were called to reports of a large fire at a commercial building on Townley Street in Middleton.

"Crews arrived quickly at the scene. Firefighters used a turntable ladder, hydraulic platform, multiple ground monitors and a light portable pump to extinguish the fire.

"Crews have been in attendance for around five hours and twenty minutes and are still at the scene, working with colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service to make the area safe.

"Residents are advised to avoid the area and to keep doors and windows shut."
