Lodge Mill Demolition: Historic Middleton Landmark Reduced to Rubble in a Single Day

A dramatic and emotional day unfolded in Middleton as demolition crews moved in to take down what remained of Lodge Mill, following the devastating fire that tore through the historic site.

Contractors D Hughes Demolition and Excavation were initially tasked with removing only the top storey of the building, after early structural inspections suggested that the lower levels could potentially be saved. However, as work began and further assessments were carried out, it quickly became clear that the damage was more extensive than first thought. Throughout the day, a site building inspector made multiple visits, closely monitoring the condition of the structure and advising on safety. Following these inspections, the decision was made to remove additional storeys, with concerns growing over the building’s stability. What began as a partial demolition soon escalated into a much larger operation. At one stage, it was believed that the mill’s iconic chimney would also need to be brought down. But after further review, a decision was made to preserve the chimney, allowing one final piece of the site’s history to remain standing. Crews wasted no time getting to work. Long-reach Excavator tore through weakened brickwork, bringing down wall after wall in a controlled but relentless operation. Within hours, the transformation was stark.

What once stood as a recognisable and historic structure quickly became unrecognisable, reduced to piles of brick, timber, and debris. By the end of the day, only the ground floor of the mill remained standing. Amid the destruction, one familiar and much-loved part of the site has survived — the community’s favourite ice cream parlour at The Lodge, offering a small but meaningful sense of continuity. Manchester Today was on site throughout the day, capturing the demolition as it unfolded. For many, it was a deeply emotional sight — watching a piece of Middleton’s history disappear in real time. The mill, once a proud part of the town’s identity, now lies in ruins. The scenes serve as a powerful reminder of the fire’s impact and the fragility of historic landmarks. With the majority of the structure now cleared, attention will soon turn to the future of the site.
While much has been lost, the preservation of the chimney — and parts of the lower structure — offers a glimmer of hope that the story of Lodge Mill is not over just yet.
Manchester Today will continue to follow developments closely as Middleton looks ahead to rebuilding after a devastating loss.

The owners of the Lodge Mill Martin and Paula have now set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds to help towards having the community back at The Lodge Mill.
