Following her heartbreaking passing on 23rd April 2026 after a brave battle with cancer, family, friends, and members of the local community are now asking for one simple but powerful gesture: to make Middleton blue.

From ribbons and balloons to clothing, shop displays, and window tributes, residents are being encouraged to show their support in any way they can — creating a united, visible tribute that reflects the love so many people had for Shona.

Those closest to her say the idea is about more than just colour — it’s about coming together as a community, standing side by side, and honouring a life that meant so much to so many.

Shona leaves behind four children, and a family who are continuing to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. In the midst of that grief, the overwhelming support from the community has already begun to shine through.

“This is about giving her the best Middleton send-off we possibly can,” a family member shared. “She deserves to be remembered in a way that shows just how loved she truly was. Seeing the town come together would mean everything to us.”

Funeral date and times are 19th May 2026 at 11:30am it has been shared that Shona’s final journey will take place by horse and cart from her home address in Langley, with the final destination at Boarshaw Crematorium — a fitting and personal farewell. Please see below the confirmed route for Shona’s final journey:

The procession will depart from her home address at 139 Latrigg Crescent, Middleton, and will proceed as follows:

  • Travelling along Windermere Road, Middleton

  • Continuing onto Langdale Drive, Middleton

  • Proceeding down Hollin Lane, Middleton

  • Along Rochdale Road, Middleton

  • Turning onto Stanycliffe Lane, Middleton

The family have kindly requested that family flowers only are provided on the day of the funeral.

The call to action has already started gaining momentum, with messages of support spreading across social media and residents expressing their willingness to take part in the tribute.

Whether it’s something small or something more visible, every gesture counts. From hanging blue decorations outside homes to wearing blue on the day, the aim is to create a powerful, unified moment across Middleton — one that will not only honour Shona, but also show the strength and heart of the community.

At its core, this is about love, remembrance, and standing together in difficult times — something Middleton has always been known for.

Manchester Today stands with the family and encourages the community to take part in making this tribute as special as possible.
