Officers were called to London Road, Hazel Grove on Wednesday evening (March 25), following reports of a person in possession of a bladed article outside the Sainsbury's store.

The incident quickly escalated, with multiple police units attending the scene as concerns grew among members of the public.

According to witnesses, shoppers inside the supermarket were temporarily prevented from leaving the store while officers dealt with the situation outside.

Several people described a tense atmosphere, with uncertainty spreading among customers as police activity intensified outside the entrance.

Manchester Today understands the store was temporarily closed for approximately 15 minutes, with doors remaining shut as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety.

Once officers confirmed the situation had been brought under control, the store was reopened and allowed to continue trading as normal.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing a large number of police officers gathered outside the supermarket, with patrol vehicles stationed along London Road.

The visible police presence reassured some shoppers, though many described the situation as alarming given the nature of the reports.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) later confirmed that officers attended the incident and took swift action.

Police confirmed that two individuals — a man and a woman — were arrested at the scene.

Both were detained on suspicion of possession of a bladed article.

Their ages have not yet been disclosed.

In an update issued on Friday, GMP confirmed that both suspects have since been released on bail, while investigations continue.

A spokesperson for Sainsbury's confirmed that the store is now operating as normal.

They said:

“Our Hazel Grove store is open as usual following an incident on Wednesday evening. We have reported this to Greater Manchester Police and will provide any assistance needed as part of their investigation.”

Incidents of this nature can understandably cause concern within the local community. However, the swift response from emergency services ensured the situation was quickly contained, with no reports of injuries.

Police have not released further details at this stage, but enquiries remain ongoing as officers continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
