Heartbreak to Hope: Community Asked to Help Reclaim Lodge Mill’s Engine House

A heartfelt call has gone out across Middleton — and now, the community is being asked to step in and help save what remains of Lodge Mill.

Following the recent demolition that left much of the historic site reduced to rubble, attention has now turned to the engine house, one of the last surviving structures. However, access to the building is currently completely blocked by debris, fallen bricks, and heavy rubble.
Mill owners Martin and Paula are now urging residents to come together and help clear the site — not just to tidy up, but to make it possible to safely enter and preserve what’s left of this important local landmark. The engine house stands as one of the final links to Lodge Mill’s past, but without immediate action, access to it could remain impossible. Clearing the surrounding gardens and pathways is now a top priority, and it’s a task that simply cannot be done alone.
This is where Middleton comes in. Martin and Paula have invited anyone willing to help to attend across the following days:
Thursday 2nd April
Friday 3rd April
Saturday 4th April
Sunday 5th April
They will be on-site from 8:00am until 4:00pm each day, working alongside volunteers and helping coordinate the effort. Those planning to attend are being asked to come prepared:
🥾 Safety working boots are essential
🚫 No toilet facilities will be available on-site
This is a hands-on, physical clean-up, and volunteers should be ready for demanding work in a rubble-filled environment.
The loss of Lodge Mill has already left many residents heartbroken, with the site holding years of history and memories for the community.
But in the face of that loss, something powerful is emerging — unity.
This effort is more than just clearing debris. It’s about coming together to protect what remains, to show pride in Middleton, and to prove that history here is not so easily forgotten. Manchester Today will also be attending, not just to report on the day — but to get stuck in and support the effort firsthand.
We’ll be alongside the community, documenting the progress and standing with those determined to make a difference. This is a defining moment for Middleton.
If Lodge Mill has ever meant something to you…If you care about preserving local history…
Now is the time to act.
Bring your boots. Bring your strength. Let’s save what we can — together. Follow Manchester Today on Facebook, and Instagram. Send your story ideas to Newsdesk@ManchesterToday.org.uk
